FALL 2000 CLASSES

• INDEPENDENT PROSE PROJECTS: FICTION, JOURNAL & AUTOBIOGRAPHY

  Class options:

  • New class in Fearrington Village, south of Chapel Hill, north of Pittsboro on 15-501: September 19-November 14. Tuesdays, 3-5 PM, in a private home. Nine weeks. Cost is $112. Subject matter: Marcel Proust's "Combray" section of Remembrance of Things Past, Volume I., and follow the scheme below, with emphasis on writing memoirs and autobiography.

  • September 11-November 13, Mondays, 7:00-9:00 PM Location: private home in Durham. Cost is $120. Subject matter: the first half of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones;* study it as a model, discuss it in depth, while reviewing basic techniques useful in all genres, like scene writing, characterization, plot, preparation, beginnings, endings, etc.

  • September 12-November 14, Tuesdays. 7:00-9:00 PM Location: private home in Durham. Cost is $120.   Everyone will work on his/her own writing project (which Hogan will read and edit), take a turn reading to the group, follow a self-designed contract, and turn in a completed piece of work at the end of the course.

• 20TH CENTURY POETS: Octavio Paz and Pablo Neruda. Readers and Writers.

  September 14-November 16. Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 PM. Private home in Durham. $120

  We will read and discuss Nobel prize-winning authors: Octavio Paz (Mexico) and Pablo Neruda (Chile). Prof. Maria Salgado of UNC-CH will share her insights on poems at one class meeting. Poets will explore in their own writing these authors' themes and forms. Interested poetry readers are welcome, too. Students will need: Collected Poems (1957-87) by Paz, translated by Elizabeth Bishop (0-8112-1173-8) Norton, and Late and Posthumous Poems (1968-74) by Neruda, translated by Ben Belitt (0-8021-3145-X), Grove-Atlantic. Both paper.*

  How to Enroll

  To enroll in any of the classes, send a deposit to Judy of $20. No exceptions. The balance of the fee is due at the first meeting unless prior arrangements have been made. First time students should expect to pay the balance of the fee at that time. Payment by check, or through VISA or Mastercard. Contact Judy for questions and directions to the first class. Class limit: 12, first-come, first served.
