Fall 1999 Classes

INDEPENDENT PROSE PROJECTS: FICTION, JOURNAL & AUTOBIOGRAPHY

This class is offered on both Mondays and Tuesdays in the evening. September 13 & 14 -- November 15 & 16. Mondays & Tuesdays, 7:00-9:00 PM. Cost: $110. Location: private homes in Durham.

Everyone will work on his/her own writing project, read to the group, follow a self-designed contract, and turn in a completed piece of work. We will read the first half of Anthony Trollope's Orley Farm;* study it as a model, discuss it in depth, review basic techniques useful in all genres: scene writing, characterization, plot, preparation, beginnings, endings, etc.

20TH CENTURY POETS: Sergei Esenin and Osip Mandelstam for Readers and Writers

September 16-November 18. Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 PM. Private home in Durham. $150 We will read and discuss Russian poets Esenin and Mandelstam.* in translation. Irina Yelevich, formerly an editor in a Moscow publishing house, will assist with understanding the Russian. Poets will explore in their own writing these authors' themes and forms. Interested poetry readers are welcome, too.
