Saturday, December 11, 1999. 12 - 4 PM. Cost $40. At Judy's house in Moncure. Workshop limit: 15.
Judy will share her experiences and thinking about a life that enhances one's writing. Participants will work out goals and strategies to help them feel more supported by and in control of their money, time, body, friendship and family networks, and other resources. Lunch will be selected recipes from her PMZ Poor Woman's Cookbook.
Everyone will work on his/her own writing project, read to the group, follow a self-designed contract, and turn in a completed piece of work. We will read second half of Anthony Trollope's Orley Farm;* study it as a model, discuss it in depth, review basic techniques useful in all genres: scene writing, characterization, plot, preparation, beginnings, endings, etc.
Students will be assistant editors for a cooperative project through Sister Cities of Durham with the Kostroma Writers' Organization in Russia for an anthology of N.C. poetry: The Earth and The Soul. All submissions will be read by members of the class. Class will provide hands on experience in how poetry moves from manuscript submission to finished book. We will develop criteria, discuss why poems should be included and work closely with Editor Sharon Ewing and Consulting Editor Judy Hogan. This book will be published in the fall of 2000 in both Kostroma and Durham.
